Before first use
Before first use, rinse removable accessories that touch water or milk with hot water. Let washed parts dry before assembly.
Place the machine upright on a flat, stable surface. Fill the water tank with fresh drinking water and the hopper with unflavoured coffee beans. Connect the small power plug at the back, then the mains plug to an earthed socket. Switch on and let the heating and automatic rinse finish; the drink icons light steadily when ready.
Brew five coffees initially to let the machine adjust. A little coffee residue in a new machine can remain from factory testing.
Use a non-abrasive damp cloth for the machine. Never immerse the machine or cord. Unplug before hand cleaning; the powered cleaning programs and grounds-counter steps below have their own sequences. The brew group, water tank, hopper lid and separate grounds-container front panel stay out of the dishwasher.
At setup or after a water change
The factory setting is level 4. Set the measured level for the water you use.
Immerse the test strip in tap water for one second. Wait one minute and count the red squares.
Tap Settings, select Water hardness with the arrows and press OK. Match the displayed red squares to the test strip, then press OK.
Before using the classic milk frother
Tilt the black silicone connector to the left and slide the clean, dry classic milk frother onto it. Align the selected symbol on its knob with the black arrow.
When choosing to use AquaClean
The machine does not detect a new filter automatically. Activate every new filter you install.
Tap Clean, select AquaClean with the arrows and press OK. Press OK again on the activation screen and follow the display.
Shake it for about five seconds. Immerse it upside down in a jug of cold water and shake and press it for 30 seconds.
Press the filter vertically onto the connection in the tank, down to its lowest position. Fill the tank with fresh water and refit it.
Place a bowl under the hot-water spout or the fitted classic milk frother. Press start/stop and let the one-minute hot-water activation finish.
Daily
Daily, or sooner: Or when the red indicator rises
Remove and empty the drip tray. With the machine on, also empty the grounds container every time the tray is removed.
Wait at least five seconds before returning the grounds container and tray.
Every 2 days
Keep the water fresh between the separate weekly tank rinses.
Use the tank's water within one to two days. Empty and refill with fresh drinking water. If the machine has stood unused for three days or longer, empty the tank, rinse it thoroughly and refill before making a drink.
Weekly
Switch off the machine. Remove the water tank and open the service door. Press PUSH and pull the brew group out by its grip.
Rinse thoroughly under the tap, carefully cleaning the upper filter. Let the group air-dry before refitting; do not dry it with a cloth.
Align the arrow on the yellow cylinder with the black arrow and N. If needed, lower the lever until it touches the group base. Slide the group along its rails until it clicks, without pressing PUSH. Close the service door and refit the tank.
Weekly
Check whether ground coffee has clogged the compartment.
Switch off and unplug the machine. Remove the water tank, open the service door, press PUSH and pull out the brew group. Open the ground-coffee compartment lid and move a spoon handle up and down until the compacted coffee falls through.
Align the arrow on the yellow cylinder with the black arrow and N. If needed, lower the lever until it touches the group base. Slide the group along its rails until it clicks, without pressing PUSH. Close the service door and refit the tank.
Weekly
Remove and empty the container while the machine is on. Wash it under the tap with washing-up liquid, or in the dishwasher. Keep the separate front panel out of the dishwasher.
Keep the container out for at least five seconds before putting it back so the grounds counter resets.
Weekly
Remove the tray and wash it under the tap with washing-up liquid, or in the dishwasher. Keep the separate grounds-container front panel out of the dishwasher.
Whenever the tray is removed, empty the grounds container while the machine is on. Wait at least five seconds before returning it.
Weekly
Rinse the water tank under the tap. Keep it out of the dishwasher.
Weekly
Use a non-abrasive cloth to clean the machine front.
Monthly
This removes coffee oils separately from the weekly water rinse.
Use only Philips coffee-oil-removal tablets. Tap Clean, select Brew group clean with the arrows, then press OK. Follow the display instructions through the complete program.
Every 2 months
Switch off the machine. Remove the water tank and open the service door. Press PUSH and pull the brew group out by its grip.
Apply a thin layer of Philips grease to the piston, the shaft underneath the group and the guide rails on both sides.
Align the arrow on the yellow cylinder with the black arrow and N. If needed, lower the lever until it touches the group base. Slide the group along its rails until it clicks, without pressing PUSH. Close the service door and refit the tank.
Every 3 months
Every 3 months, or sooner: Or at 0% or a replacement prompt
Only applies while you use an AquaClean filter.
If you use AquaClean, replace it at least every three months or earlier at 0% or a replacement prompt. The filter reaches 0% after 95 litres. A 10% message means buy a replacement. If the indicator has disappeared, descale before fitting a new filter.
After each use
With the frother attached, put a cup under it. Tap Clean, select Quick milk clean with the arrows, press OK and follow the display. Wipe the frother with a damp cloth.
Let the frother cool completely. Tilt it left and remove its metal and silicone sections. Separate all three parts.
Rinse all parts with fresh water or wash them in the dishwasher. Let them air-dry completely, reassemble and refit the frother.
At the prompt or tray removal
Remove and empty the grounds container while the machine is on. Also empty it whenever you remove the drip tray, even if only a few pucks are inside.
Wait at least five seconds before putting the container back. Emptying it while the machine is off, or returning it too quickly, prevents the counter resetting.
When the display requests descaling
Tap Clean and select Descaling. Follow the display. Remove the classic milk frother if attached. Empty and refit the drip tray and grounds container.
Empty the water tank and remove AquaClean if fitted. Pour in the whole bottle of Philips descaler, then add water to the Calc/Clean mark and refit the tank.
Place a 1.5-litre container under the coffee and hot-water spouts. Press start/stop. Let the descaling and rinsing finish, approximately 30 minutes; refill the tank when the display asks. Wait until dispensing has stopped.
If you use AquaClean, install and activate a new filter after descaling.
When changing the grind setting
After the first 100–150 cups, adjust only if needed. Put a cup under the coffee spout, open the hopper lid, select Espresso and press start/stop.
While the grinder is running, press down the knob and turn it one notch. A lower setting is finer and stronger; a higher setting is coarser. Brew two to three drinks to assess the change.
After prolonged non-use
If unused for three days or longer, empty and thoroughly rinse the tank, then fill with fresh drinking water.
If fitted, prepare the filter for use again before refitting: shake about five seconds and immerse upside down in cold water, shaking and pressing for 30 seconds. Replace it if three months old, at 0% or when replacement is requested. Preparing an existing filter does not restart its replacement age.
Remove the classic milk frother if attached. Select Hot Water, and press start/stop to dispense two to three cups. The machine may need five coffees to readjust after a long break.
