Getting started

Get your coffee machine ready

Before first use

  1. 1

    Rinse the removable accessories

Before first use, rinse removable accessories that touch water or milk with hot water. Let washed parts dry before assembly.

  2. 2

    Fill and start the machine

Place the machine upright on a flat, stable surface. Fill the water tank with fresh drinking water and the hopper with unflavoured coffee beans. Connect the small power plug at the back, then the mains plug to an earthed socket. Switch on and let the heating and automatic rinse finish; the drink icons light steadily when ready.

  3. 3

    Let the taste settle

Brew five coffees initially to let the machine adjust. A little coffee residue in a new machine can remain from factory testing.

  4. 4

    Keep cleaning simple

Use a non-abrasive damp cloth for the machine. Never immerse the machine or cord. Unplug before hand cleaning; the powered cleaning programs and grounds-counter steps below have their own sequences. The brew group, water tank, hopper lid and separate grounds-container front panel stay out of the dishwasher.

What you need

  • Non-abrasive cloth

Keep in mind

  • Keep clear of hot-water and steam jets. Let dispensing finish before removing the milk attachment. Do not use a damaged machine or cord; arrange authorised service.

Set the water hardness

At setup or after a water change

The factory setting is level 4. Set the measured level for the water you use.

  1. 1

    Test the water

Immerse the test strip in tap water for one second. Wait one minute and count the red squares.

Wet the hardness strip for one second.
Wait one minute before reading the red squares.
  2. 2

    Save the matching level

Tap Settings, select Water hardness with the arrows and press OK. Match the displayed red squares to the test strip, then press OK.

Select the hardness level matching the test strip.

What you need

  • Water-hardness test strip

Fit the classic milk frother

Before using the classic milk frother

  1. 1

    Fit the clean frother

Tilt the black silicone connector to the left and slide the clean, dry classic milk frother onto it. Align the selected symbol on its knob with the black arrow.

Slide the classic milk frother onto the black silicone connector.

Keep in mind

  • The frother can release small hot-water jets before steam. Use its protective handle; never steam milk for longer than 90 seconds.

Activate an AquaClean filter

When choosing to use AquaClean

The machine does not detect a new filter automatically. Activate every new filter you install.

  1. 1

    Open activation

Tap Clean, select AquaClean with the arrows and press OK. Press OK again on the activation screen and follow the display.

  2. 2

    Prepare the new filter

Shake it for about five seconds. Immerse it upside down in a jug of cold water and shake and press it for 30 seconds.

Immerse the filter upside down and shake or press it for 30 seconds.
  3. 3

    Seat the filter

Press the filter vertically onto the connection in the tank, down to its lowest position. Fill the tank with fresh water and refit it.

Seat the filter vertically and press it fully down.
  4. 4

    Complete activation

Place a bowl under the hot-water spout or the fitted classic milk frother. Press start/stop and let the one-minute hot-water activation finish.

What you need

  • New Philips AquaClean filter
  • Jug
  • Collecting bowl

Keep in mind

  • AquaClean is optional. The machine must be completely free of scale; descale first if the activation message has disappeared.
  • Use drinking-quality water. A filter does not make unsafe water safe.
  • Activation dispenses hot water.
  • If authorities require tap water to be boiled, boil and cool it before filling the tank. After the advisory ends, clean the machine and fit a new AquaClean cartridge.

Replace the AquaClean filter

Every 3 months

Every 3 months, or sooner: Or at 0% or a replacement prompt

Only applies while you use an AquaClean filter.

  1. 1

    Remove the used filter

If you use AquaClean, replace it at least every three months or earlier at 0% or a replacement prompt. The filter reaches 0% after 95 litres. A 10% message means buy a replacement. If the indicator has disappeared, descale before fitting a new filter.

  2. 2

    Open activation

Tap Clean, select AquaClean with the arrows and press OK. Press OK again on the activation screen and follow the display.

  3. 3

    Prepare the new filter

What you need

  • New Philips AquaClean filter

  • Activate every new filter. Never treat preparation of an existing filter as a new three-month period.

Clean the classic milk frother

After each use

  1. 1

    Run quick cleaning

With the frother attached, put a cup under it. Tap Clean, select Quick milk clean with the arrows, press OK and follow the display. Wipe the frother with a damp cloth.

  2. 2

    Cool and take apart

Let the frother cool completely. Tilt it left and remove its metal and silicone sections. Separate all three parts.

Separate all three classic frother parts.
  3. 3

    Wash, dry and refit

Rinse all parts with fresh water or wash them in the dishwasher. Let them air-dry completely, reassemble and refit the frother.

What you need

  • Cup
  • Soft cloth

Keep in mind

  • Quick cleaning releases small hot-water jets. Let the frother cool completely before touching or disassembling it.

Empty the coffee grounds container

At the prompt or tray removal

  1. 1

    Empty with the machine on

Remove and empty the grounds container while the machine is on. Also empty it whenever you remove the drip tray, even if only a few pucks are inside.

Pull out the tray to reach the grounds container.
  2. 2

    Allow the counter to reset

Wait at least five seconds before putting the container back. Emptying it while the machine is off, or returning it too quickly, prevents the counter resetting.

Descale the machine

When the display requests descaling

  1. 1

    Start descaling

Tap Clean and select Descaling. Follow the display. Remove the classic milk frother if attached. Empty and refit the drip tray and grounds container.

  2. 2

    Fill with the solution

Empty the water tank and remove AquaClean if fitted. Pour in the whole bottle of Philips descaler, then add water to the Calc/Clean mark and refit the tank.

Pour in the whole descaler bottle, then add water to the Calc/Clean line.
  3. 3

    Finish both cycles

Place a 1.5-litre container under the coffee and hot-water spouts. Press start/stop. Let the descaling and rinsing finish, approximately 30 minutes; refill the tank when the display asks. Wait until dispensing has stopped.

  4. 4

    Replace the filter if used

If you use AquaClean, install and activate a new filter after descaling.

What you need

  • Philips descaling solution
  • 1.5-litre collecting container
  • New Philips AquaClean filter if used

Keep in mind

  • Never drink descaling solution. Do not use sulphuric, hydrochloric, sulphamic or acetic acid, including vinegar.
  • Finish descaling and rinsing before preparing a drink.

Adjust the grind setting

When changing the grind setting

  1. 1

    Let the grinder run

After the first 100–150 cups, adjust only if needed. Put a cup under the coffee spout, open the hopper lid, select Espresso and press start/stop.

  2. 2

    Turn one notch while grinding

While the grinder is running, press down the knob and turn it one notch. A lower setting is finer and stronger; a higher setting is coarser. Brew two to three drinks to assess the change.

Press the grind knob and turn it one notch only while grinding.

Keep in mind

  • Never turn the knob more than one notch at a time or adjust it while the grinder is stopped.

Refresh the machine after a break

After prolonged non-use

  1. 1

    Refresh the water

If unused for three days or longer, empty and thoroughly rinse the tank, then fill with fresh drinking water.

  2. 2

    Check AquaClean before use

If fitted, prepare the filter for use again before refitting: shake about five seconds and immerse upside down in cold water, shaking and pressing for 30 seconds. Replace it if three months old, at 0% or when replacement is requested. Preparing an existing filter does not restart its replacement age.

  3. 3

    Flush with hot water

Remove the classic milk frother if attached. Select Hot Water, and press start/stop to dispense two to three cups. The machine may need five coffees to readjust after a long break.

What you need

  • Jug
  • Collecting cup

Keep in mind

  • If you are unsure whether an old filter is still suitable, use a new filter and its activation guide.
