Before first use
Care is prepared for EP2231 without a suffix. If your label says EP2231/42, choose that exact model for its regional instructions.
Read and keep the safety booklet. Rinse all removable water-, coffee- and milk-contact accessories with hot water before first use. Fill the water tank with fresh water and the bean hopper with plain roasted beans. Switch on and let the automatic rinse finish; the machine is ready when the drink lights stay on. Brew 5 coffees initially to let it adjust. AquaClean is optional and is not supplied with every model; availability varies by country.
When brew-group care is needed
Switch off and wait for the machine to stop, then unplug. Remove the tank, open the service door, press PUSH and pull the brew group out by its grip.
Align the arrow on the yellow cylinder with the black arrow and N; if needed, push the lever down to the base. Slide the group along its rails until it clicks, without pressing PUSH. Close the service door and replace the tank.
When fitting a new AquaClean filter
The machine must be free of limescale; descale first if the orange AquaClean light has gone out. With the machine on, shake the filter for about 5 seconds. Immerse it upside down in cold water and shake or press it for about 30 seconds. Press it vertically onto the tank connection as far down as possible. Fill the tank with fresh water and refit it.
Remove LatteGo if attached. Put a bowl under the hot-water outlet. Hold AquaClean for 3 seconds, then press start/stop. Hot water runs for about 3 minutes. Wait for the blue AquaClean light. Each new filter needs activation; insertion alone is not detected.
During first-use setup
Use a water-hardness strip according to its instructions. The default is 4. Switch off, keeping power connected, and hold aroma strength until all its lights come on. Select 1 light for one red dot or four green dots, 2 for two red dots, 3 for three, or 4 for four. Press start/stop to confirm. If the strip result is unclear, ask support for the matching setting.
Before using LatteGo
Rinse LatteGo before first use. With the milk container and frame clean and dry, put the top of the container under the frame hook, then press the bottom until it clicks. Tilt LatteGo onto the hot-water outlet and press it into place.

When Calc / Clean flashes slowly
Keep the machine on. Remove the milk accessory. Empty and refit the drip tray and grounds container. Empty the tank and remove AquaClean. Pour the whole bottle of Philips descaler into the tank, then add water up to Calc / Clean. Refit the tank and put a 1.5 litre container under the coffee and water outlets. Do not use descalers based on sulphuric, hydrochloric, sulphamic or acetic acid, including vinegar.
Hold Calc / Clean for 3 seconds, then press start/stop. Let the descaling phase run until the empty-tank reminder. Empty and rinse the tank, then fill it with fresh water to Calc / Clean. Empty and replace the collecting container; press start/stop again. Wait for rinsing to finish and the drink lights to stay on. The whole process takes about 30 minutes. If using AquaClean, install and activate a new filter.
After every use
Remove LatteGo and pour out remaining milk. Press the release button and separate the container from its frame. Wash all parts in the dishwasher or under the tap with lukewarm water and washing-up liquid.
